OSHA Incident Rate Calculator

Incident Rate Calculator

Use this Incident Rate Calculator to quickly determine your organization's incident rate based on the OSHA formula: (Number of recordable incidents × 200,000) ÷ Total hours worked.

The Incident Rate formula is widely used in safety performance tracking. It normalizes incidents to 100 full-time employees working 40 hours per week, 50 weeks per year.

If you are a health and safety professional, you’ve probably been asked to “check the incident rate” more than once. This OSHA incident rate calculator makes this simple — just plug in your total recordable incidents and total hours worked, and it gives you a number you can compare with industry averages. The official recordable incident rate formula is:

(Number of recordable incidents × 200,000) ÷ Total hours worked

This is the same method used in a recordable incident rate calculator, a lost time incident rate calculator, or even a DART rate calculator. Each focuses on a slightly different part of your safety performance, but the idea is the same — to understand how often incidents are happening compared to how much work is being done.

So, what is a good OSHA incident rate? There’s no single magic number. It depends on your industry average, your site’s history, and your safety goals.

In general, the lower the incidence rate, the better — but the real value is in spotting trends early and taking action before they turn into bigger problems.
